Legislation
Needed to Make Independent Agencies More Accountable for their Rules

Washington,
DC (October 7, 2015)
– The National Federation of Independent Business applauds
the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee for advancing
legislation that would require independent agencies to improve their regulatory
process. The Independent Agency Regulatory Analysis Act, introduced by Sen. Rob
Portman (R-OH), would allow the President to require independent agencies to
evaluate the costs and benefits of their rules.

“We
want to thank Sen. Portman, Sen. Warner and the Committee for their work on
this sensible bill to strengthen the regulatory process,” said Amanda Austin, NFIB Vice President of
Public Policy
. “Right now, independent agencies don’t have to think about
how their rules could harm small businesses. The government shouldn’t be
regulating blindly.”

The
bill would both require agencies to perform analysis to evaluate costs and
benefits and require them to adopt the least burdensome approach. They would
also be required to evaluate alternatives to regulation. There are a number of
independent agencies in the federal government including the Federal
Communications Commission, the Securities and Exchange Commission, the Social
Security Administration and the Small Business Administration.
