American Consumers Expect To Increase Holiday Spending This Year

Date: October 14, 2014

Consumers Also More Focused On Black Friday

Accenture has released its annual survey of
consumer holiday spending, and it shows that Americans are more optimistic
about the amount they intend to spend this year. The survey found that 25
percent of consumers plan to spend more on the holidays this year, up from 20
percent in 2013. The survey also found that the average spending on holiday
gifts is expected to be $718. In addition, 66 percent of consumers say they are
likely to shop on Black Friday, up from 55 percent last year and 44 percent in
2007. However, in a down note for some bricks-and-mortar only retailers, 37
percent plan to do at least some of their shopping online, up from 33 percent
last year.

What This Means For Small Business:

Holiday sales are the key for many retailers. A boost in consumer spending is
likely to be a boon, though the survey does suggest the importance of an online
retail presence.
